Frequently asked questions
Are my images uploaded to a server?
No. Your images are compressed entirely in your browser and are never uploaded to our servers.
How much smaller will my images be?
It depends on the image and the settings. Large photos often shrink a lot with little visible difference, while images that are already well compressed may barely change. Every image shows its exact before and after size.
Why did a file get larger?
Re-encoding can make a file bigger — for example a PNG that was already optimised, or a JPG saved at a higher quality than before. The result clearly says when a file got larger. Try a lower quality, or WebP or JPG for photos.
Does the quality setting work for PNG?
No. PNG is lossless, so browsers save it without a quality setting and the result may not be much smaller. To make a PNG photo smaller, save it as JPG or WebP instead. PNG and WebP keep transparency; JPG fills transparent areas with white or black.
Are my images resized?
No. Compressed images keep exactly the same width and height. Images that are too large to process safely in your browser are rejected instead of being scaled down. To change dimensions, use the Image Resizer.
What happens to GIF and BMP images?
With “Keep original format”, GIF and BMP images are saved as PNG, because browsers can’t create GIF or BMP files. Animated GIFs are compressed using the first frame only.
